Bernie Lee Herd, 84, passed away on August 19, 2017 at his home in Broken Bow, OK.  Mr. Herd was born September 22, 1932 in Mead, OK to Morris and Elsie Willis.  He enlisted in the Oklahoma National Guard in 1949 and graduated Durant High School in 1952.  He also served in the United States Army in the A Battery 264th Field Artillery Battalion in Germany and was honorably discharged in 1955.  He later attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

 

Through the years Mr. Herd worked in various positions doing seismograph/drilling work, maintenance work and at Gammon’s Pawn Shop in Broken Bow, OK.  He is best remembered for being a milk deliveryman in Southeast Oklahoma for Colvert’s Dairy and Gilt Edge Dairy for 32 years.

 

Bernie had a big heart and always enjoyed helping others.  His ready smile and friendly demeanor made him welcome in any setting and he had many friends.  He was a member of the Broken Bow Jaycees, a 32nd Degree Master Mason of the Scottish Rite, and a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation.  He was affiliated with the Baptist Church.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Richard Watson of California.

 

Bernie leaves to cherish his memory his sons Bernie, Jr. and wife Doris of Burleson, TX and Shawn Herd of Broken Bow, OK; four grandchildren, Ashlie Rubio and husband Omar, Zackery Herd, Anna Herd and significant other Austin Tomlinson, and Seth Herd; great-grandchildren Iris, Eva and Andrew; special friend Hubert Gammon; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

 

The family would like to thank Hubert Gammon for his friendship and support.  Also, we would like to thank Neighborhood Hospice of Millerton, OK.  The end of life care they provided was with the utmost compassion and loving care.
