Brenda Faye Burris-Young was born March 30, 1955 to the late Earl and Jonnie B. Burris (Richards) in San Francisco, California; she was the youngest of three siblings. She transitioned from the earthly realm on October 27, 2024 at McCurtain Memorial Hospital in Idabel, Oklahoma.
Later her and the family moved to Sacramento, until her father’s death in 1965 where they relocated and remained in Oklahoma. As a child Brenda was affiliated with the West Minister Presbyterian Church in Sacramento, California; Pleasant Valley Presbyterian, Broken Bow, Oklahoma where she became a church Elder and served as treasurer. She later became a member of the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Broken Bow.
Brenda “Georgie” as her loved ones usually addressed her, graduated from Broken Bow High School, Class of 1973. Brenda attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Class of 1979. She was widely engaged with campus affairs and also served in student government. Brenda also worked as a radio host on Southeastern’s campus. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication with a Minor in Sociology. Brenda served as NAACP youth advisor and was a zealous NACCP member for the McCurtain County Chapter.
Brenda cumulatively contributed 33 years of service to the State of Oklahoma. She served at Beavers Bend State Park and Nature Center in Hochatown, Oklahoma, then later served as a Social Worker for the Department of Human Services as Child Welfare Specialist for numerous years. Finally, for (CHBS) Comprehensive Home-Based Services until her health declined. Brenda loved being in service to others, especially children. Helping children was her passion.
Brenda loved spending time with her family and friends, she was the life of the party that always said the first thing that came to mind. If you did not catch her at the casino, she would be out enjoying yard sales and browsing through antique shops. She was known for her cooking and most of all “Her Famous Spaghetti.” She enjoyed shopping, traveling and definitely cracking jokes.
She is preceded in death by her parents, one half sibling Jesse B. Lewis, and stepson Rickey R. Young Jr.
She leaves to cherish her three sons: Jonathan L. Cubit, Zachary M.K. Young, and Samuel X. Young all of Broken Bow, Oklahoma. One sister, Linda F. Smith of Broken Bow, Oklahoma; a brother Earl Burris (Carolyn) Mount Pleasant, Texas. Special niece, whom she considered her daughter, Megan Smith, Calera, Oklahoma. Brenda also leaves many cousins, nieces and nephews and several friends to treasure the many memories.
A Celebration of Life Memorial will be held Saturday, November 9, 2024 from 1:00 to 5:00 P.M., at Eastside Community Building, 101 Spigner Drive, Broken Bow, OK.
