J.M. Baggs, Jr., 91, of Pickens, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, November 6, 2024. He was born on Saturday, February 4, 1933 to parents, Thomas and Altha (Walters) Baggs in Pickens, OK, he was a devoted minister and rancher, deeply cherished by his community and family.
J.M. Baggs returned to Pickens in 1962 with his wife and family, he worked with a construction crew building Broken Bow Lake. He served as the minister of Pickens Holiness Church for 60 years. Apart from his pastoral duties, he managed a cattle and poultry ranch and took pleasure in custom hay baling in the surrounding communities. His first love remained the ministry, through which he touched many lives by singing, officiating funerals, weddings, and preaching. He cherished Sunday family dinners at home with his family.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of sixty-seven years, Willa Lea (Watt) Baggs; his parents, Thomas and Altha Baggs; daughter, Lajuanna Engler; grandson, Eric Brooks; sons-in-law, Steve Brooks and Kurt Meeks; sister, Inez Baggs; and brothers-in-law, Leon Scarberry, Vernon Holmes, and Rick Hays; niece, Tara Hays Thompson; nephews, Junior Baggs and Ronnie Scarberry.
He was a loving father and papaw, survived by his children: Jimmy Baggs of Pickens; Debbie McDaniel and husband, Tommy, of Pickens; Pam Parsons and husband, Mike, of Battiest; and Sandy Meeks of Bethel, special friend, Wendell Ensley; His legacy extends to twelve grandchildren, Dusty Baggs and wife, Morgan of Sallisaw, David Baggs and wife, Julie of Sallisaw, Becky Mason and husband, Brandon of Mayfield, KY, Beth McGrew and husband, Steven of Glenwood, AR, Suzanne Stacy and husband, Justin of Oktaha, OK, Dooley Parsons and wife, Lindsay of Garvin, Tuff Parsons and wife, Samantha of Battiest, Sabrina Meeks and fiancé, Dylan Rudisill of Broken Bow, Kaleb Meeks of Bethel, Jared Engler and wife Bay of Idabel, Jacie Engler of Broken Bow; granddaughter-in-law, Jessica Brooks of Elizabethtown, KY; twenty-three great-grandchildren, Alex, Emma, Julia, Dalton, Katelyn and husband, Dylan, Devon, Haley and husband, Nathaniel, Trent and wife, Karleigh, Lauren, Riley, Cayden, Logan, SerahBeth, Brooklyn, Kash, Jana, Tyann, Rye, Raylynn, Jamie, MyKah, Sadie and Heston; one great-great-granddaughter, Jerzee Kate; sisters, Christine Holmes, Ilene Scarberry, Joyce Hays all of Pickens, Velda Campbell and husband, James of Century, FL; brothers, Melvin Baggs and wife, Sharon, Wayne Baggs and wife, Edna all of Pickens; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Visitation will be held Sunday, from 4-6 PM at Pickens Holiness Church, Pickens, OK.
Funeral Services are set for Monday, November 11, 2024, at 1:00 PM at Pickens Assembly of God Church, Pickens, OK with Rev. Lendell Birdsong, Bro. Brandon Mason and Bro. Hank Baggs officiating. Interment to follow at County Line Cemetery, Pickens, OK.
