Joan (Smith) Wheeler Obituary

Joan Smith Wheeler gained her heavenly wings on August 6, 2025.  Joan was born on September 12, 1937, to Vallie McNeal Smith and Moman Preston Smith in Childress, Texas. Joan met the love of her life, Billy “Myrl” Wheeler, while she was still in high school and they married on March 5, 1954. Joan lived most of her adult life in Holly Creek. Affectionately known a Nana by all who loved her, her greatest joys were her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was the epitome of a homemaker and especially known for her delicious pies. She was affectionately referred to as the “Pie Lady” by those who enjoyed eating the pies she baked. After retirement, she took great joy in making quilts designed and specially made for the members of her family and to commemorate the welcome addition of a new baby in the family.  She also enjoyed her time spent volunteering with the Pink Ladies at McCurtain Memorial Hospital for years.  There was always plenty of sweet tea and food to be enjoyed by all at her house.

Joan is preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Earl Smith.

Joan leaves to cherish her memory, brother, Don Smith of Idabel; sisters, Reba Bryant of Idabel and Mary Joyce Hawley; her beloved daughters Sarah and husband, Terry Prater of Broken Bow, Cathy and husband, Gene Cockerham of Idabel; her son, Preston and wife, Leisa Wheeler of Idabel; she leaves six grandsons, Mark Baker and Cyne’ Smith of Idabel, Randall and Sandy Baker of Ponca City, Eli and Michaela Prater of Van Alystyne, TX, Drew and Kelsey Prater of Broken Bow, Koty and Kaitlin Wheeler of Idabel, Skyler and Hailey Wheeler of Idabel; eleven great-grandchildren, Gareth Baker and Addison Christie, Shaylee and Chetley Baker, Jonah Price, Machenzie McClellan, Sarah Prater, Karity and Jazzlyn Prater, Colton and Cason Wheeler; she also leaves a host of family and friends to cherish her memory and remember all the happy memories with her.
