Nelda Ann Hunkapillar Obituary

Nelda Hunkapillar, a cherished and beloved member of the Broken Bow community, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2025, at the age of 76 in her home, with her family. Born on February 10, 1949, in Idabel, Oklahoma, Nelda’s life was characterized by her unwavering kindness, her commitment to her family, and her deep-rooted faith.

After graduating from Broken Bow High School in 1966, Nelda married her high school sweetheart, Terry Hunkapillar, on August 3, 1970, and together they built a life filled with joy and purpose.

Nelda’s teaching journey began in 1971 in Broken Bow, and then was led to Clayton, Eagletown, and finally back to Broken Bow where she taught for 25 years. She was loved by many of her students and co-workers and left an everlasting mark on those she encountered. Her dedication to education did not cease upon retirement; she continued to provide reassurance and guidance to all, and her willingness to help others in need was undeniable.

Nelda was a beacon of joy and warmth within her family, and she cherished the time spent with her loved ones, especially cooking and sewing with her grandchildren. Nelda took pride in her grandchildren’s achievements and was always eager to hear about their latest activities.

She enjoyed lunches with her close friends and absolutely loved watching the Savages and Sooners play football.

Nelda is preceded in death by her husband, Terry Hunkapillar; her parents, Rushing and Lois (McCarrell) Rhoden; her brother-in-law Mike Vadnais; and sister-in-law, Jean Rhoden.

Nelda is survived by her sons and their wives, Trent and Stacey Hunkapillar of Durant, OK, and Darren and Cortney Hunkapillar of Broken Bow, OK; her brother Larry Joe Rhoden of South Coffeyville, OK; her sister and her husband Ruby and Larry Crowell of Broken Bow, OK; sister-in-law Carlette Vadnais of Broken Bow, OK; brother-in-law Darryl Hunkapillar, her grandchildren Abby and Keaton Hunkapillar of Durant, OK, and Remi and Slate Hunkapillar of Broken Bow, OK; a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, her church family, and many close friends.

Her faith never wavered, no matter what her situation. We will miss her beautiful smile and warm hugs. Our comfort is knowing that the impression she left will live on in those she knew and loved, and in turn those people will forever remember a great mother, great grandmother, nana, sister, aunt, great friend, and beautiful person.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Bunch-Singleton Funeral Home Chapel, Broken Bow, OK.

Funeral Services are set for Thursday, November 13, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Broken Bow Church of Christ with Bro. John Cannon officiating. Interment will follow at Watson Memorial Cemetery, Broken Bow, OK.
