Sherry Gaye Finley, a lifelong resident of Wright City completed her earthly journey on Sunday, September 14, 2024 at the age of 74. She was born January 17, 1950 in Hugo, OK the daughter of Austin and Era Ellen (Campbell) Finley.
Sherry was a beloved school librarian for thirty-four years and returned to Wright City Schools after retirement and volunteered as a reading tutor and she was only stopped by the 2020 Covid Pandemic. She was involved in numerous organizations including Wright City School Alumni Association, Wright City Chamber of Commerce, Wright City United Methodist Church, Wright City Girl Scouts and Miss WCHS Lumberjax Pageant Committee. She was honored to be chosen as Wright City Lumberjax Fan of the Year.
Sherry was a remarkable person that lived a life full of curiosity and persistence. She loved purely, prayed unceasingly, forgave easily, and remembered everything. She showed her love through asking questions, caring about the details, and never turning down a child’s request to read a story over and over again. Sherry enjoyed cheering for her favorite sports teams, keeping up with her beloved soap operas, reading every word of the McCurtain Gazette, watching game shows, and chronicling the timeline of both family and local history. She was everyone’s favorite – a loving sister, aunt, community member, and friend.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Austin and Era Finley; her stepmother, Reba Finley; her siblings, Jo Christopher, Bob Finley, and JoAnna Cupit.
Sherry leaves to cherish her memory her siblings, Nita Campbell and husband, Loyd of Wright City, OK; Lynn Coons of Tuttle, OK and sister-in-law, Wanda Finley of Sawyer, OK; brother-in-law, Melvin Cupit; nieces and nephews, Erica and David Roath of Wright City, OK, Susan and Nicky Slabaugh of Idabel, OK, Austin and Jeramy O’Berry of Collinsville, OK, Logan and Cristal Lindly of DeQueen, AR, Blane Lindly of Wright City, OK and Collin Finley of Sawyer, OK, Alex, Reed and Eli Roath, Finn and Eva O’Berry, Manny Hernandez, Knox Short and Beckham Lindly, Shanna Taylor, Chad Coons, Melva Palmer, Laci and Michael Pendergraff and Toby Trantham; bonus brothers and sisters, Bill and Debbie Claborn, Larry and Bonnie Ham; special friends, Sara McKeever, Malicha Reynolds and Sydney Beene; a host of other family, friends and students.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5-7 P.M. at Bunch-Singleton Funeral Home Chapel.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Thursday, September 19, 2024 at 10:00 A.M. at the Wright City High School Auditorium with Tom Ellis officiating. Interment to follow at Slater Memorial Cemetery, Wright City, OK.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Wright City School Media Center P.O. Box 329 Wright City, OK 74766 in continuing her legacy of putting books in the hands of children.
