Walter (Barney) Harris Obituary

Walter Glen "Barney" Harris passed away peacefully on September 13, 2025, in Paris, Texas.  Born on September 30, 1944, in Texarkana, Arkansas, Barney's early years were filled with the warmth and wisdom of his parents, Walter Harris Sr. and Salena Ada Watson-Harris, both of whom preceded him in death. His mother's influence was particularly profound, shaping his character and his outlook on life in countless ways.

A proud 1962 graduate of Broken Bow High School, Barney's education laid the foundation for what would become a successful and fulfilling career. His professional journey led him to Boeing, where he excelled as an engineer. His work not only showcased his technical expertise but also his innate curiosity and his desire to understand how things worked. Barney's career took him from the bustling DFW area to the scenic landscapes of Renton and Everett near Seattle, where he indulged his passion for cycling, people-watching, and exploring the local architecture and culinary scene.

Upon retiring, Barney found joy in a surprising role at the South Lake, Texas Home Depot. He often quipped that he was helping the well-to-do make their dreams come true, but behind the humor was a man who took genuine pleasure in assisting others and sharing his vast knowledge.

Barney's love for his mother was ever-present. He cherished memories of their time together, from picnics in California where they cooled their drinks in a stream to the life lessons learned from her gentle reprimands. He carried her spirit in his heart, finding joy in women's basketball in honor of her college years as a player, and in the teachings of Joyce Meyers, which echoed the strong values instilled in him from childhood.

One of the coolest things about Barney was his zest for life and his readiness for a road trip. A simple outing could become an epic journey with Barney behind the wheel. His friends knew that a day with him meant "windshield time," a term he coined for the deep conversations that unfolded as they explored new places, indulging in good food, ice cream, and the shared experience of the open road. Barney's passions were as varied as they were intense. Fast cars, music, and the feel of a manual transmission were among his greatest loves. As much as he was a man of action, Barney also had a contemplative side. He reveled in the beauty of water, rocks, and trees, and spent countless hours discussing and appreciating unique architecture and automotive designs. His insights were as sharp as they were unique, and he was always eager to share the thoughts that "bounced around between his ears" with those he held dear.

Barney's legacy is carried on by his ARK pals, a close-knit group of friends from his home state, and a host of other friends who were drawn to his vibrant personality. Those who knew Barney will continue to cherish the memories they created together.
